Beautiful sarcophagus mask from the late period (664 - 332 BCE) of ancient Egypt. An excellent and large example, retaining bits of original pigmentation and paint. These masks, idealized versions of the deceased, were used to protect the body in burial, and help towards the crossing into the afterlife. It was thought that the Ba or the soul would fly out of the body in the form of a bird, or bird with human head every morning to rejuvenate with the sun, and would fly back to the body in the evening, with these masks as beacons to ensure recognition from the Ba of the correct burial site. This large scale wood example exudes brilliant carving and wear of 2500 years.
