Brilliantly crude and incredibly early old master preparatory sketch depiction of Saint Sebastian hung on a tree and shot by arrows, while surrounded by a monk, an angel and two other saints. Done in ink on hand laid and unsized paper - denoting that this piece was created within the first quarter of the 15th century, in Venice, Italy. Coming from the well documented 18th and 19th century English collections of painter Thomas Hudson and art dealer William Mayor, the latter of which published a book on old master works and their different schools in 1875. Housed in a contemporary frame with a black double mat.
