Incredible preparatory sketch with depiction of Judith holding the head of Holofernes, done in the studio of Lodovico Carracci (1555 - 1619) in the late 16th century. Carracci, from a family of painters and artists, helped introduce the Bolognese school of the late 16th century into the forefront of Italian renaissance art. This brilliant depiction of Judith with her maid, holding the severed head of Holofernes is a common theme in renaissance and baroque art, yet undoubtedly striking. Collection marks from Thomas Dimsdale (1712 - 1800).
