A brilliant, unfinished study of a young lady by the Royal Academy member William Charles Ross (1794 - 1860). Beautiful soft watercolour on paper, with an intense gaze outward. Tonally, this painting is truly beautiful, hues of blue accented by the deep and light tones of brown in the hair draped on the soft beige backdrop, framed in a more recent wood and gilt frame, matted.
William Charles Ross is a well known painter of Scottish descent, becoming a member of the Royal Academy in 1842. Mainly focussed on portraits and miniatures, this work reflects his mastery of capturing figures. At the age of twenty, he began working as an assistant for the preeminent Scottish miniaturist Andrew Robertson before developing his own clientele of figures like Queen Victoria, the Duchess of Kent, Queen Adelaide and the royal children. His work still recognized worldwide.
