Beautiful pastoral scene of a shepherd tending to a flock of sheep in a field, painted in the late 17th century in the circle of German born Philipp Peter Roos (1655 - 1706). Roos, although German born, studied in Amsterdam before moving to Rome in 1677 and actively working thereon. Known for his baroque era pastoral scene work, he was known for his beautiful paintings of oxen, sheep and goats.

Intense craquelure throughout the painting with a small bit of loss, this oil on thick canvas is stretched onto its original heavy oak stretcher and contemporarily framed to a modern wooden frame. Incredibly beautiful and soft painting, possibly in religious reference to Christ as the good shepherd, but also possible it is no more than a pastoral scene. Either way, a beautiful painting of the baroque period.
