A brilliant and emotive study done by Sir John Watson Gordon (1788 - 1864), president of the Scottish Royal Academy, of a woman in mourning. An incredibly delicate and evocative sketch. Sir John Watson Gordon was elected the president of the Scottish Royal Academy in 1850, after membership dating since 1840. He was primarily a portrait painter and painted many members of nobility throughout Scotland and England. This piece is beautifully housed in a carved wood frame and sat behind a deep red mat.
