Beautiful and highly evocative 17th century head of the god Pan, god of the wild. Incredible carving and detail in the sculpture of large scale. Pan is depicted with the horns of a goat, unfortunately lost to time in this sculpture showing remnants, but retaining great detail in facial features, eyes and mouth. Recognized as good of fields, glens and groves, and often affiliated with sex, Pan is also often connected to fertility and the seasonal rejuvenation of spring. An evocative sculpture of great scale, measuring 20” high on stand, this is a truly captivating piece.
