Carved bone sheathed tanto or small sword, beautifully carved with scenes of workers throughout. A stunning short blade is encased within, beneath a well carved bone tsuba. Said to have often been carved of the leg bones of deceased Buddhist monks - these were blades of ceremonial purpose as opposed to battle. Blade unmarked but in remarkable condition, sword dating to the mid to late 19th century, Early Meiji period (1868 - 1912). Repairs throughout and small losses but with intense detail through every inch of the saya. Displayed on contemporary stand.
