An incredibly rare complete example of an Etruscan cinerary casket urn, made in Chiusi, Italy between 600 - 300 BCE. Cinerary urns held the cremated remains of an individual, typically depicted reclined on the lid of the urn as this example shows

Although a relatively simple execution and design on the body of this cinerary urn, it is masterful in its creation, showing three motifs, generally apotropaic in their meaning, lining the front, and shell form handles on either side. The most striking piece of this urn is the lid, featuring the design of a blanketed and covered deceased figure, depicting the effigy of the deceased on the lid to symbolize their continued involvement in rituals and banquets while existing in the afterlife. An exceptionally rare complete example with both lid and body in wonderful condition.
