Absolutely incredible 14th - 15th century sandstone temple carving depicting Nagaraja, king of the Naga - the divine half man - half serpent beings that live in the netherworld Patala. Patala is often described as more beautiful than its heavenly counterpart, Svarga, in its splendour, and composed of seven realms, the lowest of which, Naga-loka, housing the Naga.

Under a canopy of five snakes and atop two praying figures in Patala, this is an incredibly monumental carving, standing at 27” in height on it’s stand, likely an early ornamental piece from a temple. A truly beautiful and large scale example, standing atop a contemporary black stand.
