Era: 12th Century

Dimensions: 12” H x 6” W x 5” D

Intensely beautiful 12th century stone sculpture of a head of a lion-man hybrid, exhibiting beautiful features synonymous with the late Romanesque and early medieval period in Tuscany, Italy. An incredible example showing both expert carving while remaining naive and crude. The stone has gained a beautiful natural patina over the nearly thousand years of its life, likely originally built as a finial for a church or estate. Its detailed eyes exhibit haunting gaze while the nose and mouth are much more crude in execution.
