Incredibly enigmatic towering limestone body of an Ibis from the Middle Kingdom period (2040 - 1782 BCE) of ancient Egypt. The highly revered ibis, known as the earthly representation of the god Thoth, symbolizes wisdom, writing and magic. It’s curved long beak, resembling a scribe’s pen, and crescent moon - linking it to intellectual pursuit. Originally adorned with a bronze head and legs, this statuary piece would have been a large votive offering in a tomb or funerary environment.

Towering on its stand, standing at 12” high, this is a very large example of early stone ritual statuary from Egypt. Old break and solid repair on the tail portion, solid condition.

Provenance: large NYC antiquities collection, decommissioned from a Toronto museum collection.
