An incredibly rare example of an English Knight’s Templar stone effigy, depicting a bearded crusader or knight with a rendering of his sword next to him, circa 12th Century. English Templaria is scarce, let alone an effigy of the human and weaponry behind the typical Templar imagery. Carved in a manner similar to early Medieval English Celtic form, of rough sandstone, heavily oxidized from iron content within the ground, giving the stone an amazing colouration and patina throughout. Displayed on contemporary three-arm stand.
The emergence of Templar presence began in the early 12th century when the founder of the order visited England to find men and raise money for the soon to be crusades. Many famous sites in England have their legacy in Templar foundation - nearly all sites using the name “Temple” can trace it’s roots to the order.
