12th century Italian marble depiction of the Visitation, likely after the representation of the visitation on the altar of Duke Ratchis, built between 737 and 744. The naive yet deeply evocative, unnerving yet beautiful depiction is set onto a 5" thick slab of marble, with an incredibly impactful weight. The marble, likely originally white with veining, has darkened over nearly 1000 years of devotional life. Presented on a contemporary metal stand.
