Beautiful northern Italian marble carving, dating to the 12th century, depicting a scene with a rider on horseback, possibly detaining two individuals with onlookers in the background. A surrounding Latin engraving “ernite servant juestra crimine evigious aeber tus divino” loosely translating to “They keep their oaths against your lord”. Believed to be a scene of capture of religious opposers, the onlookers appearing to be holding a snake, possibly as a reference to the garden of eden. The marble is absolutely stunning, subtle in the shade but marvellously shines when backlit. Shown on contemporary metal stand.
