Stunningly weathered 15th century sandstone corbel head depicting an imp. An incredibly unique and grotesque figure, with the most unusual tunnelled ears, with weathered and somewhat faint eye and nose features above a small circular mouth. Imps in folklore were small, demonic creatures, known for causing mischief and havoc. Originating from the North Countries of England, this piece shows an old fixation hole on the reverse side where it would have been attached to a wall. The grotesque face shows signs of blackening from industrial exposure over centuries lived. Displayed on a contemporary metal stand.
