Incredibly impressive early 19th century American School portrait of sitter Phoebe Mullican, with inscription on verso “Phoebe Mullican, Wife of Rowland Chambers, Died 1826”. This is an incredible depiction and important painting as in genealogical research, it’s been found that Mullican was the mother to the second governor of the Iowa Territory and US representative of Kentucky John Chambers. Mullican and husband Rowland Chambers lived in Mason County, Kentucky where prominent early American portrait artists like Aaron Houghton Corwine and Matthew Harris Jouett resided, giving some credence for possible attribution as this was a family of certain importance. Beyond the story, this is an incredible portrait of visual appeal, the detail in the facial features, garments and sofa upon which she is seated are quite stunning. Quite a grand scale at 35” high and 32” wide, housed in a later pine frame. Evidence of early restoration work present, and in wonderful condition. Certainly an important early American portrait with deep visual appeal.
