Era: 17th Century

Dimensions: 43.5” H x 36.25” W

An incredibly beautiful 17th century Flemish painting, done in the circle of Pieter Snayers (1592 - 1667) showing an extremely violent battle scene. Men on horses utilizing swords to kill each other as a battle takes place, horses down, men stabbed, all before a beautiful landscape in the distance. An incredibly dichotomous image, showing beauty and violence within a singular setting. Massive in scale, at 43.5” high by 36.25” wide, this piece is extremely characterful and commands attention. Set into an early tiered giltwood frame, relined and cleaned.

Pieter Snayers was well known for his panoramic depictions of calvary battle scenes. Well known for these scenes, he was the appointed military iconographer in Brussels and also collaborated multiple times with Peter Paul Rubens.

From the collection of Frantisek Sembdner, Prague, and later a private Toronto collection of old master work.
