Lovely mid-late 17th century Neapolitan School painting of Christ falling under the weight of the cross. A well painted example, showing Simon of Cyrene lunging forward to assist Christ, surrounded by Roman soldiers and attendants. Strong visual and emotional tension shown between the interaction of figures, with beautifully soft painted back and foreground. Likely done by a student in the circle of Luca Giordano (1634 - 1705), as visual cues are shown in a similar light, as well as the elder figure in the red cap, being an often shown motif in Giordano’s work. Painting has been relined and cleaned, and custom framed in a contemporary frame, retaining beautiful baroque period character.
