Beautiful English school portrait of the 5th Duke of Argyll, John Campbell, done in the last quarter of the 18th century. A large scale portrait showing an older duke, dawning a beautiful velvet jacket with a frilled top, a well painted face showing age and a longing gaze as well as hair styled in a queue - a powdered ponytail popular amongst 18th century military officers. Very expressive, at points naive, but overall well pictured. Housed in a period frame, some missing gesso but overall shows well. Large in scale at 37.5” x 32.5” in frame.
