Originates from: Northern Europe
Circa: 1680
Dimensions: 31.5” H x 26.5” W
Beautiful late 17th century Northern European school half length portrait of Saint Augustine. The bearded saint, draped in his habit and writing a canonical text, peering over to his right to see a bleeding Corpus Christi. Inscribed S. Agvstinvs across the top of the painting, with a textile or cloth behind him showing a dragon and two reaching hands, GLV underneath. An incredibly dark and sobering depiction of this saint, beautifully executed and deeply emotive.
Mounted within period wood slab frame, relined and recently cleaned and sympathetically restored. Some small loss and repair, consistent with age. Of wonderful and quite impactful scale, 31.5” high by 26.5” wide.
From the estate of Monsignor Graham Wilkinson, priest of the Archdiocese, Birmingham, UK.
