A lovely mid 17th century oil on board portrait of one of the first significant painters from England, the portrait artist William Dobson (1611 - 1646), done by an artist in Dobson’s circle. An incredibly expressive and enigmatic portrait showcasing Dobson’s flowing hair and period-trending moustache. Dobson gained commission from Charles I after Anthony Van Dyk’s passing, and during the English civil war, forced to be based with the royal court at Oxford, painted many leading cavaliers. A well preserved 17th century painting of a prominent artist who died in poverty at only 35 years old. Housed in custom frame.
