Ancient Egyptian Naqada II period (3500 - 3200 BC) predynastic vase with brilliant banded red horizontal and waved decorations surrounding both the globular body and tapered neck of the vase - the wave decorations likely representative of the Nile. Two lateral handles flank either side of the vessel. Wonderful scale and presence, sitting 12” in height.
Lovely patina across the surface of the vessel, showing its nearly 5500 year old lifespan, but in excellent condition.
The Naqada II period of ancient Egypt was a significant time in the history of the country, marking defining advancements in art and craft, as well as societally, going from an egalitarian culture to one of more layered power.
Provenance: collection of historied Italian auction house owner, since retired. Procured last in the 1980s.
