Stunningly aged and weathered canopic jar lid, of carved limestone, from the Old Kingdom period of ancient Egypt (2700 - 2200 BCE), displayed on contemporary acrylic and metal stand. Canopic jars were used to house embalmed organs during the mummification process and to preserve the viscera of the soul - although these vessels were also known to be found empty, buried in undisturbed tombs, suggesting they were also used symbolically in burial. Although detail is faint, an animal’s head can be seen by shape on this example.
