A lovely study of a rocky landscape done in charcoal on paper from the circle of Dr. Thomas Monro (1759 - 1833). Dr. Monro was a physician, who worked at one point on George III, while also being a large patron of the arts, even having founded an Academy in London, where the group of artists that surrounded him were known as “Monro’s Circle” which included William Turner, John Varley, Peter De Wint and many others. Although unsigned, this piece is from that circle of late 18th - early 19th century artists. Amazing movement and energy in this, showing beautifully the life in nature.
