Bes, worshipped as protector of household, children, and essentially all that is good from all that is bad, is an ancient Egyptian deity, likely derived of Nubian origin. Depicted wearing a feathered headdress, with long beard and giant phallus - this terracotta figure likely would have sat in a home as a form of protection or for apotropaic purpose. Made of terracotta, perched atop a contemporary stand. Two repaired cracks are present but in solid form. Dating between the Late Dynastic period (404 - 343 BCE) and Roman period (1st - 3rd century AD).
Provenance: from collection of United States based collector and cane expert, Kimball Sterling.
