An incredibly rare and captivating life size terracotta head, Roman in origin from the south of Italy, dating to the 1st-2nd Centuries AD. This depiction of emperor Hadrian, who ruled from 117 - 138 AD, exhibits stunningly defined detail in the hair, beard and facial features while the detail-less eyes stare blankly. Likely the head from a large standing sculpture, this is a rare survivor of Roman statuary work of this scale.
Provenance: from large italian collection, last purchased in 1985. Accompanied by COA.
