Beautiful tempera on panel devotional painting of Saint Catherine of Siena, done by a follower of the master Andrea Vanni (1332 - 1414), an integral figure in early renaissance painting. Done in the late 17th - early 18th century by a clearly experienced painter, this small panel exudes the emotion and softness in Vanni’s work. Cloaked in a white habit, and holding white lilies, symbolic of purity and spiritual virtue, against a backdrop of simple dark green. A beautiful example of the style and intent of Trecento, early italian devotional renaissance artwork.
