Absolutely striking late 19th century Tau Tau funerary effigy from the Toraja group in the mountainous region of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. These figures acted as funerary effigies, believed to hold the spirit of the deceased allowing the soul to live on and maintain a link between the living and dead. This example, stunning in its large scale, standing 21” high on its plinth stand. Exhibiting beautifully evocative facial detail carving and maintaining some gesso across the reverse side. Deep inset eyes, well proportioned nose and ears and carved mouth. An impressive and very evocative carving showing ritual and funerary processes.
